From the Couch to the Road: GYSB Gets J to Ride for Socks

Kids these days don’t have the luxury of riding their bikes all over the neighborhood ALL day until dark like we did when we were younger. It’s just too risky to let them go off alone. Besides, XBOX and PS3′s have replaced hours of outdoor summer play. But it doesn’t have to be this way all of the time. You can get a bike too and spend some time outdoors this summer and fall riding with your kids. It would be considered family time, exercise time and time for exploration if you get a bike rack and go to a new area. It really could end up being something to look forward to once a week, bi-weekly or even once a month.

This weekend I wanted to go for a bike ride at the beach. Well J, my 11 year old, wanted to stay at home and do nothing. I asked him what would get him a little more excited about riding with mommy and he said if I promised to take him to the Nike store after the ride so that he could get new basketball socks with his gift card. Guess what? I came up with a better idea: We would drive the car halfway to the beach with our bikes in tow, park and ride along the boardwalk from Venice Beach to Santa Monica Beach and up the road to 3rd Street Promenade where there was —you guessed it!!! A NIKE store. It ended up being a win win situation. We had a great day, burned a few calories, shared some laughs and J got his Nike socks. ~GYSB
